Copyright Issues With Your Content
Even with Copyscape, we would have to admit that it’s hard to put a radar out for every one of the content that you put on your website or article directories. Even Google can only do so much to protect, detect and ban sites that copy your website content. We all know how much time and effort you’ve put into producing top-quality, up-to-date information and articles for your readers….we all know that but do people care?
That’s the thing…they don’t give two hoots how much effort you’ve put into your content. All they know is that they find it incredibly convenient to copy your content and place it into their websites.
The sad part of this is that not only do website owners copy others’ work, freelance content writers do that too. It’s something I call the easy way out because if you’re a writer, you can do the following and get away with most search engines.
Please…I am not giving you a bad idea but I am telling you the way it works so that you’re more careful and aware of how your content is being copied by other writers and website owners.
- Copy the article word for word
- Alter the article/content slowly, paragraph by paragraph
- Change a couple of sentences by toggling sentences and words.
- Reword certain terms
- Add or remove sentences from each paragraph
- Total change of the content should be about 30 to 40 percent in order to escape Copyscape and Google radar
As you can see, it would take an experienced freelance writer no more than 10 minutes to make the changes and then they would resell the content to another client with the same business. The crazy thing about this is that there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it! Nothing. Protecting your rights to the content on your website is still at an infancy age.
But take heart that there are many companies who are developing products, tools and strategies to help genuine website owners and writers protect their work from copycats.
Be warned….don’t hire a writer with a shady background. If the content reads very simplistic, effortless and sometimes repetitive, there is a chance that the content belonged to someone else and the writer merely copied the stuff, did minor edits and resold it to you.
