There’s this one client of mine whom I’ve been working for for a very long time….the first couple of months, we tediously worked on article marketing, among other search engine marketing activities, till one fine day, we discovered that we managed to get the website up to the first page in google. We were ecstatic about it and slowed down activities for a bit…to a less frantic pace, that is. Then one fine day, about three to four weeks down the road, he emailed me with CAPITAL LETTERS asking me what happened to his first page ranking and what was it that I do?
Befuddled, I went online and checked and…found out that his biggest competitor in the business had taken over the No.1 spot in Google and that his ranking was demoted to a page 2. I can tell you that he was a mad unhappy man and demanded to get his ranking up….like I was the main man in Google. Yikes! Anyway, I spent a great many days trying to explain to him that article marketing and search engine promotion is like a never ending game. That when you stop or slow down the work, the articles, the updates and the promotion, your rankings will most likely suffer a drop.
Why?, he asked. (more…)
In this article we’ll review two PDF file scenarios and how search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN index them. If you’re reading this, then you’re most likely concerned about SEO and how your site ranks. Before you reach out to a search engine optimization agency read about a few basic SEO tips to help your site rank better.
Scenario 1: PDF Files and Search Engines:
Put yourself in this situation. You’re a professional with a great idea for your company’s website. You want to reach out to your customer base by posting a PDF on your website. You picked a PDF format because you have control over how the document looks and you enjoy the piece of mind knowing the document is difficult to edit. Before you post the PDF, consider these three search engine optimization questions.
1. Can you highlight the text?
For SEO purposes there are two types of PDF files: files that the text can be highlighted and files that the text cannot be highlighted. If you cannot highlight the text on your PDF, you’re abandoning potentially valuable SEO content because search engines see your PDF as an image file and not a searchable document (please see scenario 2). I remember having my English teacher as my favorite teacher in the world when I was in primary school. We had a love-hate relationship back then but it was her, I remember vividly, who unleashed my passion for writing. We had a love-hate relationship because I had more than a dozen books hidden in my drawers confiscated by her and because she caught me reading while she was teaching! Anyway, one day, she asked us all to write about an exciting day we had on the way to school….which most of us most probably didn’t have! I was having a particularly bad day that day but managed to churn out a nice piece of composition for her using my imagination. Thinking back about it, I wrote that piece a little differently that day. Because I was frustrated, I ditched everything she thought me.
I wasn’t thinking about grammar or how suitable or ‘true’ the situation was. While the rest of the kids wrote about saving cats from trees, uncles falling down, feeling sick on the way to school or finding a coin on the street, I wrote about a robbery…..which wasn’t true at all, of course! But that composition won me praises from my favorite teacher in the world and admiration from the rest of the class. (more…)
